This was once said by Benjamin Franklin.  So what was his point?

Products aren’t always created equal, take the German built BMW 7 series above versus The Brilliance BS6 made in China. Which would you rather have?

Car crash example

You'll always be able to find something you want at a cheaper price....but what's the real cost?

You may buy something cheap not realising the true value of something more expensive.  If you spend £50 on a stereo it stands to reason that it would have cost less than that to make it, cheaper components, plastic finish etc.  Make it cheap, sell it cheap....it may not last very long so throw it away and buy another cheap one...and so the cycle begins again.

The Evolution of Strength Training

Tuesday, 31 May 2016 08:45:04 Europe/London

Strength training may seem like a modern concept but in fact dates back centuries.  Back in the early days it was necessary for man to be strong and fast for the purpose of hunting.  Nowadays though it is much less about survival and more about keeping fit and sculpting an aesthetically pleasing physique.

You may have heard of Milo of Croton, he was a wrestler who lived some 2,500 years ago.  An incredibly successful athlete who was also known for his great strength.  His way of building muscle and improving his strength was simple.  He began by one day lifting and carrying a newborn calf.  He did this each and every day for a period of around four years so in the end was lifting a 4 year old bull.  To put this into perspective, a fully grown bull can weigh around 907kg!

Strength Training

Equipment used for weight lifting evolved throughout the years but remained fairly crude until the 1900's.  For example, early dumbbells were developed back in the 1700s by using a rod and two church bells.

The clapper within the bell was removed rendering the it silent or 'dumb', hence the term dumbbell

As well as equipment being simplistic, exercises also remained less complex.  The bent press was a strong man lift favoured by the likes of Arthur Saxon.  This involved taking a weight from shoulder height to above the head using just one arm.  Saxon bagged himself a world record by lifting an impressive 168kg doing the bent press.

Over time, the development of technology and knowledge has meant that methods have greatly improved and equipment offered being much more sophisticated.

Strength training became much more popular in the early 1900's, partly due to the invention of the adjustable plate loaded barbell by the Milo Barbell Company.  For the first time in weightlifting it was now possible to easily and quickly load the required amount of weight.  Prior to this, a different barbell was needed for a different weight.  During the 1940's and 50's a number of other plate loaded devices were created.  The very first selectorised multi-station machine was developed in the late 1950's by Universal Gym Company.

Throughout the 1970's strength training continued to grow in popularity and more equipment was designed and pushed out to the market place to meet the demands of this growing industry.

Looking back, weight lifting and strength training was very basic with limited options on how an exercise could be done, look at Milo and the bull.  These days new equipment, workouts and methods are changing all the time which goes to show just how popular strength training really is and how it's popularity continues to grow.

It’s official! Gym use is on the increase

Thursday, 5 May 2016 13:24:14 Europe/London

Over recent years there has been a fair amount of bad press concerning gyms, and especially gym memberships. To a certain degree while there was a market which had been created through a clear general message that exercise is good for health, joining a gym was not necessarily good for your bank balance and once a member, it was very difficult to extract yourself from any membership contract.

As we specialise in commercial gym equipment here at Kustom Kit Gym Equipment we always keep a close eye on trends and we have become very much aware of one of the main reasons why gym use is on the increase. In fact, in one article in the Guardian newspaper it indicated that between 2014 and 2015, gym membership payments increased by 44%.

Kustom Kit - Buy gym equipment online, Commercial gym equipment, gym equipment supplier

Now while you might be thinking that contradicts many people’s attitude towards tied-in gym memberships, this increase in revenue is down to a new raft of commercial gyms that do not require any long-term commitment from members. In fact, many of these gyms are open to the general public and who perhaps charge a daily use fee of around £5.00, which is great news. What is particularly clever about this type of gym is that you can try it out for £5.00 and then if you like the setup, you can then take out a flexible membership.

It is with the rise of these more independent and one-off gyms that we have also seen a substantial rise in the demand for commercial gym equipment. As our name implies, we specialise in providing custom-built gym equipment to suit what our clients want rather than what we tell them they are going to get. This is particularly important for where a good number of gym owners are looking to attract a more niche market rather than the general keep fit one. Pick up any lifestyle magazine today and where men are concerned, and it is fair to say women also, the wash board-flat six-pack abs have become the Holy Grail of the younger generation and, as a result, more and more gyms are looking for commercial gym equipment that are designed to target abs during a workout.

What we are also aware of here at Kustom Kit is the demand for quality and robustness of gym equipment. In the same way people take a car for a test drive and check out the quality of the interior as much as the car’s performance, for commercial gyms who wish to build a solid membership, not only does the equipment have to do the job in question, but it also has to look good not just today, but in a year or two’s time. Using only the highest grade materials, and highly-qualified engineers and designers, Kustom Kit is rapidly gaining nationwide recognition as a supplier of some of the highest quality commercial gym equipment available today.

So, whether it is for the creation of a home gym, or a commercial gym, we would genuinely appreciate a call from you and we will be more than happy to discuss in detail your specific requirements.

Commercial gym equipment and the “Olympics effect”

Monday, 25 April 2016 13:29:00 Europe/London

In only a couple of months’ time the 2016 Olympic Games will begin in Brazil. After the massive success of the Great Britain team at the 2012 Olympics in London, many people are once again being gripped by Olympic fever, and here we are not necessarily talking about the athletes. One thing that you can be certain about is that the Olympic Games are hugely motivational and inspirational to many people who are perhaps subconsciously aware that they are not as fit as they should be, or could be. It is impossible not to be influenced by highly-tuned athletes who are at their peak of physical prowess and who push themselves to the absolute limit in search of their lifelong dream, an Olympic gold medal.

After the Olympics have taken place, you can be guaranteed to see a dramatic rise in the number of people joining commercial gyms, and this in turn leads to an increase in demand for commercial gym equipment. To a degree it is not just a coincidence that the Olympics are round the corner at the same time as there has been a massive increase in the number of new gyms opening up that do not belong to large chains or which have horrendous tie-in contracts that are almost impossible to get out of.

Kustom Kit - Buy gym equipment online, Commercial gym equipment, gym equipment supplier

We mentioned in a different article about the nightmare of gym membership, but the new brand of gyms opening up today work on a different premise and allow you to come and go virtually as you please. This is ideal because membership of a major commercial gym is not cheap and you don’t get the option to ‘try before you buy’. These new gym enterprises are almost the antithesis of the gym setup that has been getting such bad press. As a result, more people are now trying a gym out and then are much happier to join because they know they are going to get their money’s worth.

As a nationwide supplier of commercial gym equipment, here at Kustom Kit we have seen at first hand the changing nature of the commercial gym business along with an associated increase in demand for our high-quality commercial gym equipment. Part of the reason why we are gaining such a solid reputation within the industry is through our ability to provide gym equipment based specifically on our clients’ requirements as opposed to simply having a standard range. As far as we are concerned, it is madness to expect athletes to train based on the equipment that is available when for anything to be effective, that gym equipment has to be designed to meet people’s individual needs. As a result, a number of these new commercial gyms are becoming more specialised and only have equipment designed and built to meet a specific demand.

If you’d like to know more about how we can help supply you with impressive top-quality commercial gym equipment, then please feel free to get in touch with us at any time and we will be more than delighted to tell you exactly how we operate to ensure that we meet all our customers’ specific commercial gym equipment needs, every time.

Commercial gyms are still on the increase

Monday, 25 April 2016 12:00:47 Europe/London

Today, more than ever, great emphasis is being put on the importance of exercise and keeping fit. Pick up any lifestyle magazine and no longer are pages covered in glossy photographs of celebrities in less than flattering situations. Instead these images now portray how celebrities have transformed themselves, visually, and how ‘fit’ they look. Because society is so heavily influenced by the media, these images are having a dramatic effect on the younger generation, and especially men.Kustom Kit - Commercial gym equipment, gym equipment supplier

The six-pack now seems to be becoming the Holy Grail for so many young men and certainly women aren’t complaining about this. However, let’s be fair here as there are more than a few women who have also embraced toning their physique to the point where they too have washboard-flat stomachs thanks to spending a great deal of time down the gym. It seems that the gym has now become the new ‘social club’ and rather than meeting up at a bar to unwind after work, “let’s meet up at the gym” is becoming more and a more popular choice.

The other type of gym is one which concentrates more on strength and power, on body toning and honing, the traditional environment for those searching for their own personal Holy Grail. With wall-to-wall commercial gym equipment this is an environment that is totally conducive to motivating those who want to keep pushing themselves to see just how far they can transform their physique.Embracing this new fit society has seen the rise of a great number of new gyms and gym chains, which is good news for us here at Kustom Kit Gym Equipment as we to are seeing a substantial increase in the demand for commercial gym equipment. There seem to be two types of gym, one such as the new Frame gym chain setup by two friends, Joan Murphy and Pip Black. This type of gym concentrates more on aerobic fitness and exercise in what is best described as a fitness studio.

Whether it is a one-off gym, or whether you have a business plan to open up a chain of gyms, to attract the serious athlete, that person who wants to look ‘ripped’, you will want them to feel they have found the perfect gym for their needs the moment they walk in your door. With custom built commercial gym equipment that looks both impressive and perfectly fit-for-purpose, the hard work attracting new members becomes so much easier as, after all, the hard work should be the domain of those who actually use the equipment!

Here at Kustom Kit we are convinced that this is not just a social fad but instead a long-term sea change in the mentality of a large percentage of the population. We know from experience that given the right environment and the right equipment that helps new members of a gym achieve noticeable results relatively quickly, these are not people you have to encourage to renew their gym membership at the end of every year. These are not the sort of people who will perhaps come two or three times and give up, and these are exactly who you need as members to help you succeed with your gym.

We believe we can provide you with commercial gym equipment of the highest quality and which will help promote all the benefits of regular visits to the gym, so why not give us a call and let’s have a chat to see how Kustom Kit can help you succeed in what is definitely a very competitive business environment.

Home gyms are increasing in popularity

Monday, 11 April 2016 12:15:26 Europe/London

It is clear from virtually everything you read in today’s newspapers that regular exercise is extremely important for our health. There is only one problem though and that is that society today demands that we work harder and for longer hours, thus limiting our leisure time. Worse than that, after a long day at work many of us don’t feel like punishing ourselves further by going to the gym for an extra hour rather than just getting home, having something to eat, then putting our feet up and relaxing.

Because so many of us commute to work, getting home is often the biggest challenge of the day and is foremost on our mind when we do eventually finish work. However once home and once we have had a chance to unwind there is often still time for a half hour or a full hour’s workout, well at least there would be if we then didn’t have the hassle of having to go out again down to the local gym. The compromise that we are seeing more and more of here at Kustom Kit Gym Equipment is the demand for custom-built commercial gym equipment to be installed in our customers’ homes.

Kustom Kit - Commercial gym equipment, gym equipment supplier

If you Google “best home gym equipment” though, you are unlikely to see the type of commercial gym equipment we manufacture here at Kustom Kit. Instead you are more likely to see a list of what we consider more to be accessories, such as a gym ball, fit bell kits, a mini trampoline, or treadmill. This, however, is not the sort of home gym equipment we are talking about. The commercial gym equipment we produce here at Kustom Kit is tailor-made to either a commercial gym’s requirements or that of our individual customers. In other words, you tell us what you want to do and what you want to achieve, and we will create something that is perfect for your needs and which doesn’t look like it will break if you use it to enthusiastically!

You don’t have to be a serious athlete to reap the full benefits of Kustom Kit commercial gym equipment, though we will admit that a great deal of our equipment is used by elite athletes. Part of the reason for this is because we build commercial gym equipment tailored to athletes’ specific needs, rather than athletes having to adapt and adjust their training routines to suit our equipment. There is more than just mechanical engineering that goes into the design of our commercial gym equipment which we are more than happy to share our knowledge with those of you who may not be elite athletes but who do take personal fitness very seriously.

As commercial gym equipment is not something you are likely to buy very often, we always welcome the opportunity to have a good discussion with all of our clients before confirming any order for our equipment. We are more than happy to guide you based on what you are hoping to achieve with the creation of a personal gym at home, so please feel free to give us a call.

Gyms have come a long way in 150 years

Thursday, 10 March 2016 12:20:00 Europe/London

Kustom Kit -Commercial gym equipment All images taken from the Wellcome Library

Only recently a leather bound book was discovered which contained a remarkable historic account written in 1861 by Gustav Ernst, an orthopaedic machinist who was based in London and who is credited as having invented the portable home gym. While it is abundantly clear that the whole concept of the gymnasium designed purely for exercise has changed beyond recognition, along with ‘gym attire’, it is also a clear indication of how the Victorians were a keen to recognise the importance of exercise.

Ernst was eager to encourage exercise, despite the fact it was seen as being "devoid of all interest and reduced to a mere display of physical power", as he also promoted the fact that there were great gains to be made. He was also very astute and many of his suggestions for exercise still hold water today, such as: "Far more benefit is to be derived from a quarter of an hour's practice repeated four times a day than from one hour's continuous use."

As important as it is today, Ernst was also aware of the dangers of over exercising, to the point where he stated: "Generally invigorating as this exercise is, it is correspondingly fatiguing and should not therefore be recklessly persevered, especially by pupils possessing but a small amount of physical strength."

We are obliged to the BBC who published this article and it certainly appealed to us here at Kustom Kit Gym Equipment in Wrington, near Bristol. We may not have been making commercial gym equipment for the last 150 years, but we like to think that the gym equipment we manufacture today is a little more up to date than the items shown on the right, even if some of the principles have remained remarkably relevant. Our particular favourite is the fourth image of a woman who seems to be using an early form of ‘step’ machine with combined traction and extension – an exercise which has become no easier with the passage of time, though wearing a dress with several petticoats underneath can’t have helped!

With the Summer Olympics rapidly approaching, there is always a wonderful legacy resulting, and that is the encouragement that so many of the sports give to future generations, and the spur that many athletes and sportsmen need that are just too young this year, but who will be in prime form in four years’ time. These are the elite athletes we look to create custom built commercial gym equipment for, and for the first class gymnasiums they attend with the finest quality equipment. There is no ‘one size fits all’ for every sport where gym equipment is concerned, and depending on your chosen sport, you will use equipment specifically designed to maximise the benefits of the time you spend pushing yourself to the limit in the gym.

To find out who we have helped and how we can help you, just get in touch or make an appointment to come down and see us – we think you will be amazed at what we can do, and what better way to appreciate the fantastic quality of the equipment we produce.
